Program objectives
Mission
Our mission is to foster a global community of passionate individuals dedicated to the well-being and enrichment of horses. Through our volunteer program, we provide opportunities for international participants to engage in meaningful experiences, learn about horses care and management, and contribute to the welfare of our equine partners. We are committed to promoting education, cultural exchange, and responsible horsemanship, while cultivating a supportive and inclusive environment for volunteers from around the world.

We aspire to create a vibrant and dynamic volunteer community that celebrates diversity, promotes learning, and fosters lifelong connections among horse enthusiasts from diverse backgrounds. By empowering volunteers to make a positive impact on the lives of horse and the communities we serve, we aim to inspire a greater appreciation for equine welfare ad equestrian culture worldwide.
Our Goals
- We aim to offer educational experiences, culture exchange and assistance in horse care and management.
- Volunteers can stay from 2 weeks and up to 3 months.
- Volunteers will engage in meaningful day to day activities involving horse care and management, while working in the trail riding centre and riding school.
- Volunteers will receive quality guidance and education while gaining valuable experience in the equestrian field.
- Volunteers will have the opportunity to work with and ride many different horses in one of the best destinations in South Africa.
Program Guidelines
Responsibilities and Expectations of Volunteers
Volunteers will be given a list of day to day responsibilities to carry out for 5 days a week. These responsibilities will range general horse care and maintenance to working in the trail centre and riding school.
Eligibility
Volunteers need to be 18 years and older.
Volunteers do not need any prior experience with horses and beginners may use this as an opportunity to learn.
Volunteers with experience are equally welcome and catered for.
Protocols and Procedures
A list of rules, protocols and procedure for handling horses and working at the yard will be given and explained comprehensively to the volunteers upon arrival.
Infrastructure and Facilities
Accommodation and Catering:
Kurland Park will provide one cooked meal a day as well as self catering, shared accommodation for volunteers. The accommodation is safe and comfortable and situated within walking distance from the stable yard. Weekly transportation to town for shopping will be provided.
Equestrian Facilities
The equestrian facilities uphold a high standard of horse welfare and hygiene. We are situated on a picturesque property with vast open spaces and stunning trail rides exploring the majestic Tsitsikama mountain range in the Garden Route, South Africa.
Training and Orientation
Orientation Program
Upon arrival volunteers will be introduced to an orientation program to familiarise themselves with yard policies, procedures and safety protocols.
Training
Volunteers will be trained daily in horse care, handling, grooming and riding skills. Volunteers will play a fundamental role in the care and upkeep of the trail and riding school herd, and will have the opportunity to go on many trail rides with guests. Included in the program, volunteers will receive lessons by qualified and experienced coaches in Show jumping, Dressage, Equitation and Natural Horsemanship.
*Polo lessons will be available to volunteers at an additional fee*
Support and Supervision
Volunteer Coordination
A staff member/ volunteer coordinator will be assigned to oversee the volunteer program and provide ongoing support for the volunteers.
Check-ins
Regular check-ins and feedback sessions will be established to address any issues or concerns raised by volunteers.
Community
We will foster a supportive and inclusive community where volunteers can connect with each other and share experiences.
We are a family based yard and we will extend the warm family feeling to all the volunteers who participate in our program
Life off the farm
Kurland Park is located in the scenic costal town of Plettenberg Bay in the Western Cape. Plett, as it is affectionately know, stands at a primer holiday destination adorned with expansive golden beaches, iconic landmarks, enchanting estuaries, and majestic indigenous forests.
Plett also serves as a the haven for various animal sanctuaries and wildlife experiences, offering a plethora of attractions for volunteers to explore during their visit. Adventure enthusiasts can indulge in an array of exhilarating activities, from bungee jumping at the world’s highest bungy, to “Africanyoning” through breathtaking kloofs. With its diverse offerings, Plett promises enjoyment for evenyone.
